Famous HomosexualsThere are many famous homosexual figures in artistic fields such as art, literature, music, and film making, but there are also lots in the political world. Some very influential rulers throughout ancient history, such as Julius Caesar and Cleopatra, were known for their homosexual or bisexual orientation. In modern times the participation of openly homosexual individuals in more fields allows societies to become more tolerant of their social and sexual identity.


The most famous openly homosexual singers are Adam Lambert (the winner of American Idol, season eight) Elton John, Boy George, George Michael and Queen’s Freddie Mercury. The entertainment business, especially the music industry, has always influenced social trends, and in terms of homosexuality it has been one of the main catalysts of the gay rights movement. European singer Mika has also openly embraced a bisexual orientation.


Within the last year the movie industry has shown its massive support for the LGBT community and the gay rights movement via the movie MILK, a story about Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected public official. Its massive success allowed the picture to become a new voice for the LGBT community and gay activists around the world. Actors like Chad Allen, Portia de Rossi, Alexis Arquette, Randy Harrison are just a few names among the large LGBT community among Hollywood actors.


Many fashion designers style themselves as homosexual. Fashion icons like Valentino, Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbana (known as Dolce & Gabanna), Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and the latest emerging fashion prodigy Christian Siriano (one of the more flamboyant gays in the American fashion industry), have influenced fashion through their amazing talent, creativity and forward-thinking vision.


Politics is one field where gay participation has yet to evolve. In keeping in line with their constituent base, the current political class is somewhat reluctant to take a stance on controversial issues. However, openly gay officials have been elected in recent times, showing yet more proof of a growing social tolerance towards various sexual orientations. Providence, Rhode Island was the first American city to elect an openly gay mayor in 2002 and recently Houston, Texas elected mayor Annise Parker, who was Houston’s first openly gay mayor.

Internationally, members of the LGBT community are increasing their presence in public official positions and other political roles. Europe has a total of 163 gay elected public officials and among the most well known ones is the mayor of Paris, Bertrand DelanoĆ« who has been mayor since 2001 and has gained massive public support ever since. North America has a total of 775 gay elected officials.
